Goddess Mayadevi, also known as Queen Mayadevi, is a revered figure in Buddhism and is considered to be the mother of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as Gautama Buddha. Mayadevi's story is an integral part of Buddhist tradition and plays a significant role in the life of the Buddha.
According to Buddhist accounts, Mayadevi was born into a noble family in the city of Devadaha in ancient Nepal. She was married to King Suddhodana, the ruler of the Shakya clan. One night, as she slept, Mayadevi dreamt of a white elephant descending from the heavens and entering her womb. This dream was interpreted as an auspicious sign, indicating that she would conceive a child who would become either a great king or a great spiritual leader.
Soon after, Mayadevi conceived Siddhartha Gautama in her womb. During her pregnancy, she is said to have traveled to her parental home in Devadaha, where she gave birth in the Lumbini Garden, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is believed that she gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama while standing and holding onto a branch of a sal tree.
Mayadevi's birth and Siddhartha Gautama's birth are often depicted in Buddhist art and sculptures. In these depictions, she is portrayed as a young and graceful woman, often standing upright, holding the branch of the sal tree. Sometimes, she is shown with a white elephant, symbolizing the auspicious dream that foretold the birth of the future Buddha.
After Siddhartha Gautama's birth, Mayadevi is believed to have passed away. However, her presence and significance remain profound within Buddhism, as she represents the maternal aspect and the foundation of the Buddha's life story. Her devotion and sacrifice as a mother play an essential role in inspiring reverence and gratitude towards motherhood in Buddhist culture.
It is important to note that the descriptions and details of Mayadevi's life may vary in different Buddhist traditions and accounts. Nonetheless, her role as the mother of Gautama Buddha and her association with the birth of Buddhism remain consistent across these traditions.
